Carter Backer Winter
|
|
Overview
|
Company Profile
|
|
Carter Backer Winter is a firm of Chartered Accountants, and Business Advisors located in Aldgate on the London City border. Established over 50 years ago we provide the traditional audit and accountancy department, plus a number of specialist services including financial services, tax, forensic and investigative services, corporate recovery and insolvency, payroll and human resources. The firm employs over 70 staff including the 12 partners.
We like to think that we are a practice with a difference. We understand that each client is different and needs a specific approach to meet their individual set of problems. We have learnt from our clients that there is no such thing as “one size fits all” and we have developed teams who can provide tailor-made solutions for all accounting and business requirements.
We focus on client services rather than industries; however we have significant expertise in the following areas: not-for-profit, construction, information technology and systems, manufacturing and distribution, professional partnerships, and property related business.
The clients
Our clients are largely based in London and the South East, but a number are located further afield; from Channel Islands to the North of England, and overseas.
The technology
To assist in making our service prompt and efficient we have embraced new technology, as it has become available. All members of the audit team, including trainees are provided with a personal laptop to ensure they can work effectively both on and off site.
The training
Carter Backer Winter takes two trainees each year, starting in mid August. We accept applications from graduates with both relevant and non-relevant degrees. In addition to a proven academic record, we require people with excellent interpersonal skills and a genuine interest in understanding and striving to meet the needs of the client.
In addition to the professional training element of your internship you will attend practical courses with pass; the aim being to help you develop skills and practical knowledge that will be utilised in your day to day work experience.
Unlike many large firms our trainees will fulfil a valuable and practical role from a very early stage. We work on the premise that it is important to create a strong foundation to learning and experience, and with this in mind you will spend some time in our Business Services Group; practising and understanding the processes involved in producing accounts from the bottom up. In addition you will assist with audits and more complex accounts. Being a Trainee Accountant is not for the faint hearted, balancing study and exam preparation with a full time job is very demanding. Therefore at all times you will receive support from colleagues, managers and partners. Your progress will be reviewed regularly; overseen by the HR function and the Partner responsible for training.

Climb to the top with Nyman Libson Paul and avoid the tedious steps.
Let's be honest, chartered accountancy can be a little tedious for trainees, particularly in some of the larger firms.
Not so with Nyman Libson Paul:
You won't be tethered to a desk labouring over massive jobs that never end. You will be in at the deep end, dealing directly with a range of clients, helping us to develop fast, imaginative and practical solutions to their business problems. One day you could be dealing with a corporate tax issue for a film company, the next investigating new commercial openings for a retailer. In fact, our clients range from major film and television production and distribution companies, London West End theatres, cinemas and media personalities to manufacturing companies, hotels, restaurants and professional firms. In addition, many are medium sized owner managed businesses, giving you the chance to experience and help share dynamic organisations.
Responsibility with First-Class Training:
You will be given responsibilities at an early stage of your career. We do this for two reasons. Firstly, because we believe there is no substitute for experience and secondly, because we want to foster the skills to enable you to think on your feet.
With the support of the partners, you will be thoroughly trained in all aspects of our work, from accounts preparation and auditing to corporate and personal taxation, backed up by the latest technology. Some of this will be on-the-job training and some through courses at a leading London college and PASS with its unique tutorial scheme.
Climb to the very top:
We will encourage you to maximise your potential with excellent career prospects as our emphasis is on internal promotion to both manager and partner level - you won't be stuck on the career ladder by age or hierarchies.
What we expect from you:
We are looking for mature, numerate and intelligent recruits who are willing work hard, study hard and even play hard. Above all, you should have the flexibility to adapt to a variety of challenging situations and the communication skills to express your ideas and deal with clients at all levels.

| The Firm and its Clients
Established for over 30 years, Rayner Essex is a 13 partner, medium-sized accountancy practice. We employ around 80 personnel at our offices in St Albans and Central London.
We act for clients in virtually every field of commerce, industry and the professions. They range from substantial companies with international operations, to small businesses and self-employed people such as actors, writers and sports personalities.
While the majority of our clients are located in London and the Home Counties, others are based throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. To meet the complex needs of clients with interests overseas, we are a member of INPACT International - an international network of accountants.
A Comprehensive Service:
Rayner Essex provides the full range of professional services expected from a highly experienced and progressive firm of chartered accountants. These include audit and accountancy, management consultancy, taxation (UK and international), capital raising, corporate finance, corporate recovery and insolvency advice.
We have always believed in offering a highly personal service to our clients. We like to be regarded by them as a valuable asset to their business - people they can contact at any time for sound advice as well as practical assistance.
Opportunities for Graduate Trainees:
Several graduates are recruited each year for training at our London and St Albans offices, according to current needs.
We particularly look for young people with numerate and analytical skills, a strong commitment to learning and high self-motivation.
Those who join us are given the fullest opportunity to acquire wide experience and develop their personal skills. Since the structure of the firm is non-departmentalised, trainees have the important advantage of participating at an early stage in all aspects of our work, under close supervision. We encourage initiative and trainees are given their own areas of responsibility just as soon as this is merited.
Rayner Essex trainees are fully supported throughout their academic programme, both with PASS and the structured courses run by the leading Tutorial Colleges. When it comes to the Professional Examinations, the firm’s trainees have regularly achieved impressive results.
Detailed below are short profiles on two of our graduate recruits
Dave - Semi Senior
“I moved to St Albans from Ireland and joined Rayner Essex having completed a degree in European Business Administration at the University of Wolverhampton and in Holland. Since joining, I have completed the professional stage of exams and began studying for my finals. During my first year I spent a lot of time out of the office with seniors at clients’ premises on audit assignments. This year I am now undertaking slightly smaller assignments on my own, both in and out of the office. The responsibility and work is challenging, but enjoyable, particularly preparing and auditing a set of accounts right the way through from the client’s records to a final document.
I have been involved in some of the larger audits Rayner Essex does, which has been very good experience and I have also audited several small local firms. I have enjoyed these more as I prefer the higher level of involvement with the accounting decisions and the close involvement with the client’s management”.
Gary - Junior
“I joined Rayner Essex having completed a music degree at the University of Southampton. I am currently studying towards my professional stage exams. Although the exams are hard and challenging, I get a lot of support from the firm and know it will be worthwhile in the end. When I am not studying I am usually working at clients. As a medium sized firm, Rayner Essex has a wide selection of clients, both large and small, which means that the work is extremely varied and rarely boring. As you become more experienced, your responsibility increases. During my second year with the firm I have gone from auditing larger clients with an audit senior, to completing audits of smaller companies on my own”.
A Good Place to Work
Our working environment is friendly and informal. Trainees can always have access to the partners and we take care to ensure that they feel part of the firm from the day they join us. Various social and sporting events help to reinforce working relationships.
